On Tuesday, Buckingham Palace confirmed King Charles III and Queen Camilla will undertake a state visit to the United States in late April to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence, including a White House state dinner and an address to Congress.
The British government arranged this state visit to help repair relations with President Donald Trump, which have been strained by the ongoing conflict in Iran. Officials hope the visit will mollify the president and stabilize the bilateral relationship.
Democratic California Representative Ro Khanna urged the King to privately meet Jeffrey Epstein survivors to hear how "powerful individuals and institutions failed them." Trump has previously dismissed the scandal as a "hoax," adding diplomatic complexity.
A recent YouGov survey shows 49% of Britons oppose the visit, while the King faces scrutiny regarding his brother, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, who was arrested under suspicion of misconduct in public office.
After visiting the United States, King Charles will continue to Bermuda for his first visit as monarch to a British Overseas Territory. This tour aims to reinforce diplomatic stability before Prince William's expected U.S. visit this summer.
